Introduction

Most people have some idea of what an eating disorder is. We generally think of anorexia or bulimia. However, eating disorders cover more ground than this. Think also about the fact that most eating disorder research is not conducted considering age, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, body shape, weight, etc. (Bunnell, n.d.).

Keeping this in mind, based on the available scientific literature, around 30 million Americans will experience an eating disorder sometime during their lifespans. About twice as many females as males are diagnosed.
